High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Casino West Public School, we recognise that high potential can manifest in many different ways across all learners. Our approach to High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is integrated into our everyday teaching and learning practices. This is supported by a strong emphasis on formative assessment, evidence-based strategies, and effective differentiation to meet the diverse needs of every student.
Here are some of the evidence-based teaching strategies used in the classroom to support all students:
Formative Assessment Tools
Teachers consistently use diagnostic assessments, observation checklists, and student self-assessments to identify individual strengths and areas for development. These tools provide valuable, real-time data that inform lesson planning and help differentiate instruction, ensuring continuous growth and engagement for every student.
Differentiated Learning Tasks and Flexible Grouping
Learning activities are designed to vary in complexity, enabling students to work independently, in pairs, or in flexible groups based on their interests or abilities. This approach ensures each student is appropriately challenged while fostering collaboration, leadership, motivation, and social skills.
High Expectations in Lesson Planning
Teachers communicate high expectations clearly by designing learning objectives that encourage higher-order thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to set personal goals, reflect on their progress, and develop a growth mindset, resilience, and self-efficacy, all of which contribute to deeper learning and higher achievement.
Student Leadership and Voice
Students are given opportunities to take on leadership roles in projects, discussions, and school initiatives that align with their interests. By setting goals and engaging in self-assessment, they develop ownership of their learning, motivation, and leadership skills.
Ongoing Professional Learning and Collaboration
Teachers participate in continuous professional development focused on inclusive strategies and collaborate regularly to share best practices. This ongoing collaboration ensures that the curriculum is consistently differentiated to support talent development, maintaining high instructional quality across the school.
At Casino West Public School, we prioritise High Potential and Gifted Education as an essential part of our educational approach. We are dedicated to identifying and fostering the unique abilities of each student by offering a wide range of flexible, diverse, and enriching experiences that promote growth in academic, creative, social, and physical areas.
